About the artist

Innokenti Baranov — Berlin Atelier

Black and white portrait of a man against a dark background

Innokenti Baranov, born in Moscow, studied graphics at the Moscow Academic Art College 1905 and later painting and animated film at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He now lives and works in Berlin.

His work blends Russian and European traditions, strongly influenced by central European expressionism and artists such as Kandinsky, Jawlensky, and Werefkin. Intense colors, reimagined classical themes, and expressive, often grotesque figures define his style, while his Russian training shows through in vivid still lifes, landscapes, and portraits.

Baranov has exhibited in over 20 countries and illustrated more than ten books published in Austria, Germany, and Russia. His caricatures of well-known athletes and politicians have also been featured in multiple exhibitions. Through his art, he seeks to express his cultural background, emotional landscape, and a cosmopolitan worldview rooted in openness, empathy, and the rejection of outdated ideas.
